SEATTLE – Joana Alves of Seattle University women's basketball set the single-game school scoring record with 34 points on senior day at the Redhawk Center. SU fell to California Baptist, 90-79, in a Western Athletic Conference (WAC) contest.
Alves was terrific on Saturday, shooting 15-23 from the floor and hitting 4-6 free throws on her way to establishing the program record. She surpassed Courtney Murphy's 33 points against Chicago State on Jan. 24, 2019. Alves' previous career high was 32 points at Kansas City on Feb. 21, 2019.
The offenses were at the top of their games in the first period, as the teams combined to score 55 points in the opening 10 minutes. CBU pulled away in the second frame and then held on in the second half to dampen SU's senior day.
Alves scored the Redhawks' first four points of the day, using her size advantage to score over the Lancers. CBU found success offensively, though, and went ahead early. Hailey Vice-Neat made a three, Kamira Sanders drove for a layup and Murphy swished a trey for a 12-10 lead at the 6:40 mark. Buckets by Chinwe Ezeonu and Alves kept SU close, and then Alves made another layup. A pair of Sanders scores made it 25-22. Sanders followed with a triple at the 1:03 mark, but the visitors scored last, taking a 30-25 advantage after a quarter.
The defenses settled in the second period, as two Alves hoops made it 34-29 with 5:34 remaining in the half. CBU began to pull away as the quarter continued and went into halftime with a 48-35 margin.
In the second half, it was Alves again greasing the SU attack. The Lisbon, Portugal, native made a layup and then split two foul shots. The Lancers eventually grew their lead to 20, but Sanders sank two three-pointers to spark a rally. Alves hit two free throws and then made a jumper to get within 61-48 with 3:19 left in the third. Alves scored again, but CBU grabbed a 67-52 lead with 10 minutes to go.
Four Olivia Crawford foul shots and a Murphy score got the Redhawks within nine early in the fourth. Alves scored twice more, but the visitors maintained their difference as time ran down. Alves finished a three-point play and then scored inside again. Genessa Bedoya lobbed a pass over the top of the defense to Alves, who laid the ball in with 14 seconds to play, setting the new scoring mark.
Sanders finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds for her fifth career double-double. Murphy added 10 points and eight boards, while Vice-Neat tallied six points and eight rebounds.
SU makes its final road trip of the regular season, visiting Chicago State (March 5) and Kansas City (March 7) to close the schedule.
