RANCHO MIRAGE, CALIF. – Jesse Walter, a Seattle U tennis alumnus and Hall of Famer, reached new heights last week with a fantastic win in the Wilson World Tennis Classic's 40+ singles bracket. The competition lasted from Jan. 16-26, when Walter defeated fellow American Andrew Scorteanu in the finals, 6-3, 6-4. His victory brings him up to a rank of 175 in the worldwide ITF 40+ Seniors Rankings.
The tournament, certified as Grade 1 (just below the elite "A" rank) by the International Tennis Federation, was played on a hard surface at the Shadow Mountain Resort & Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif., with separate brackets for every five-year age increment from 35+ up to 85+.
Walter was inducted into the Seattle U Hall of Fame in 2011. He was Seattle U's number one player for all four years of his career, which spanned from 1995-99. From 1997-98, he was ranked 14th in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) in singles and 13th in doubles, also reaching NAIA All-American status in 1998.
