COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. – Seattle U men's tennis put up some of their best play yet on Friday, taking on a powerful Air Force squad on their home turf and posting several close games. In the end, however, the Falcons finished on top, 7-0.
Junior Colton Weeldreyer greatly impressed in the number two singles slot, taking Air Force's Galvin Mack down to the wire in a 3-6, 4-6 result. In the number one slot, senior Trenton Nield made a valiant comeback attempt against the Falcon's Paul Hendrix, finishing 2-6, 4-6, while junior Emilio Monroy posted the same score against Jordan Azuma. Senior Adrian Alvarez Sanabria took opponent Jamie Bautista to the limit in a 3-6, 3-6 match, as classmate Alex Chan (2-6, 2-6) faced off against Justin Waldman of Air Force. Finally, freshman Lars Schmassman (0-6, 1-6) closed out singles play against Sean McKendree.
In doubles play, Nield and Chan teamed up against Bautista and Hendrix, posting a 1-6 score; meanwhile, Alvarez Sanabria and Schmassman were swept, 0-6, by Galvin and McKendree to clinch the doubles point. At the time, Weeldreyer and Monroy had been battling hard against Azuma and Waldman, winning two games to their opponents' four.
The Redhawks will head to Greeley, Colo., tomorrow to take on Northern Colorado, with play beginning at 6:00 p.m. PT.
