DENVER – Shi Smith of Seattle University softball has been named Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Pitcher of the Week, for the period ending on Feb. 23. The junior pitched the eighth no-hitter in program history on Friday.
Smith, a Greshman, Ore., native, threw the second seven-inning no-hitter in school history against UC Davis on Friday morning. She broke her own school record with 15 strikeouts in the 3-0 win. Smith only allowed two baserunners, as she hit two batters in the game. It marked the seventh no-no in program history.
The next day, Smith faced third-ranked Oklahoma and pitched six innings, giving up just two runs to the powerful Sooner offense. She struck out five and walked none.
Smith wrapped her weekend with a three-inning save in SU's 3-1 win over No. 18 Missouri on Sunday. She threw three scoreless innings, striking out five and allowing just one hit for her second save of the season.
In 2020, Smith is averaging 10.2 strikeouts per seven innings. The junior has established a new program record for strikeouts per seven in each of her first two seasons at SU.
Smith has now won three WAC weekly honors, taking one in both her freshman and sophomore campaigns.
