SEATTLE – In a tale of two halves Saturday night at the Redhawk Center, Seattle University men's basketball put on a show in the second frame, outscoring visiting CSU Bakersfield 44-29 to run away with a 69-54 Western Athletic Conference win.
The Redhawks completed the weekend homestand with a perfect 2-0 mark, moving to 14-14 on the season and 7-6 in WAC play, good for a three-way tie for third with three games remaining in the regular-season. Bakersfield drops to 11-17 overall and 5-8 in the WAC.
A grinding, physical first half had each side piece together runs of points, but ultimately head into the break knotted at 25-25.
From there, the Redhawks took over. A 23-6 run through the first half of the second opened up a 48-31 Redhawk advantage with 11:21 to play.
Back-to-back triples from Morgan Means keyed a 10-0 spurt during the stretch and Terrell Brown got going as well, ultimately scoring 18 of his game-high 25 points in the second half.
Bakersfield would whittle the spread down to 12, 58-46 with just under five minutes to play, but a big Delante Jones three and a pair of free throws by Mattia Da Campo kept the Redhawks rolling. The 'Runners would get no closer than 14 down the stretch.
"Bakersfield can make it tough and physical and grind it out, and they are a great rebounding team," said Head Coach Jim Hayford of the first half of play. "But we came out in the second half and shot the ball a whole lot better.
"To go against their pressure and only have six turnovers. To go against one of the best offensive rebounding teams in the country and out-rebound them. And then in the second half to shoot the ball 56, 45, 93 - this was a really well played game by our team against a quality opponent."
Along with his game-high 25 points, Brown added five assists, six rebounds and three steals. He finished 8-15 from the field and 9-10 from the stripe. Means added 11 points and Jones came off the bench to chip in 11 as well, including a trio of threes.
Czar Perry paced CSUB with 12 points while De'Monte Buckingham and Cam Allen added 11 apiece.
The Redhawks head out for their final road trip of the season next week, traveling to face California Baptist in Riverside, Calif., on Saturday, Feb. 29. Tip off from the CBU Event Center is set for 7 p.m. The game will stream live on the WAC Digital Network.
