BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Seattle University women's basketball fell, 55-43, at CSU Bakersfield Saturday afternoon. The Redhawks held the `Runners to 27 percent field-goal shooting in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) contest at the Icardo Center.
The first half was marked by strong defense, as both sides struggled to create an offensive rhythm. Joana Alves started out well, scoring seven early points, but the senior picked up her second foul and was forced to head to the bench later in the half. Olivia Crawford drove and scored and then Alves found Makenna Schoenhofer for a 15-footer and a 12-6 lead at the 3:40 mark in the first frame. Kamira Sanders made a pair of free throws, but the hosts rallied, pulling within 14-12 after a period.
SU only mustered six free throws in the second quarter, but the Redhawk defense stood tall to stay close. Seattle U forced 12 turnovers and held the `Runners to 17.6 percent shooting, including 0-10 three-point accuracy, in the first half, as CSUB held a 22-20 advantage after 20 minutes.
In the third period, the hosts pulled away, scoring the first 18 points of the half. Crawford, Hailey Vice-Neat and Alves each sank threes as the quarter continued, but CSUB took a 44-31 lead into the fourth.
Sanders scored six quick points early in the fourth, but the `Runners hit enough shots to maintain a comfortable margin for the rest of the contest.
On the day, Sanders recorded 13 points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists. Alves contributed 10 points and four boards, while Crawford logged eight points and four rebounds.
The Redhawks return home for their final home game of the season, hosting California Baptist on Saturday, Feb. 29. Tip-off for senior day is slated for 2 p.m. at the Redhawk Center.
