EDINBURG, Texas – In a game that featured a dozen lead changes and six tie scores, Seattle University men's basketball came up on the short end at the final buzzer Saturday night, 79-72, at Western Athletic Conference opponent UTRGV.

After trailing by a game-high 10 points five minutes into the second half, 50-40, the Redhawks used the next five minutes to mount a 15-5 run, capped by a Myles Carter putback dunk. Back-to-back buckets by Terrell Brown had the Redhawks leading 61-58 with 8:53 to play.

But a 6-0 Vaquero run would shift momentum back to the home team and the Redhawks would not get over the hump again.

The loss drops Seattle U to 12-14 overall and 5-6 in WAC play. UTRGV improves to 11-14 overall, 7-5 in the WAC, and has now won five straight.

Brown, who had just six points and four turnovers in the first half, bounced back to finish the night with a team-high 18 points. Means added a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double. Carter added 11 points, while Aaron Nettles and Riley Grigsby chipped in nine points each.

Lesley Varner II poured in a game-high 23 points, including 10-of-11 from the free-throw line, to pace four Vaqueros in double-figures.

The night opened with a track race as the teams combined to put up 20 shots in the opening 5:30. Seattle U got going from three-point land for the second straight night as Nettles scored all nine of his points in the first half.

The lead would change hands six times in the frame before UTRGV closed out the half by hitting four of their final five shots to carry a 41-36 lead into the break.

Seattle U had an uncharacteristic 13 turnovers which UTRGV turned into 21 points. The home side also earned a 24-6 advantage in fast break points.

While suffering a 42-37 disadvantage on the boards, the Redhawks hauled in 11 on the offensive end to edge the Vaqueros 16-6 in second chance points.

The Redhawks return home for four of their final five regular-season games, beginning Thursday, Feb. 20 against Grand Canyon. Tip off from the Redhawk Center is scheduled for 7 p.m.
