STOCKTON, Calif. – Madison hit a two-run double in the seventh inning to lift Seattle University softball to a 4-3 win at Pacific on Friday. The Redhawks beat the Tigers after dropping a 3-2 decision to CSUN at the Libby Matson Tournament.
 
In the game at Pacific, Stefanie Madrigal was solid in the circle as the freshman shut out the Tigers in the first two frames. In the top of the third, SU got on the board. Mekenzie Madokoro walked to lead off and then Lily Garcia moved her up with a sacrifice bunt. Alyson Matriotti reached on an error and Olivia Viggiano then singled to load the bases with one out. Cherise Silvan followed by lining a double to the wall in left center, driving in two runs for a 2-0 advantage.
 
The hosts came back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to even the score. They added a run in the fifth to take the lead. The Redhawks put together a rally in the sixth, but the Tigers cut down the tying run at the plate to end the threat.
 
In the seventh, Matriotti singled up the middle with one out. An error allowed Viggiano to get aboard, and after an out, Cathcart worked the count and found a pitch to drive. She doubled to left, playing Matriotti and Viggiano for a 4-3 lead.
 
Shi Smith worked a 1-2-3 frame to close out the contest.
 
Cathcart went 2-4 with two RBIs, while Madokoro posted a hit, a walk, and a run. Viggiano earned a pair of walks and scored. Madrigal pitched three innings, allowing one earned run on one hit with five strikeouts. Smith threw four frames, giving up no earned runs on one hit to go with six strikeouts to get the win.
 
Against CSUN, Shi Smith pitched well, blanking the Matadors for the first five innings of the contest. The SU offense racked up 13 hits, but stranded nine runners in the game.
 
The Redhawks got the leadoff batter on base in each of the first four frames, but could not push a run across. Smith allowed an early single, but then retired 10 straight hitters to get to the fifth inning. CSUN finally broke the scoring drought with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
 
In the top of the seventh, Alyson Matriotti reached on an error with one out. Viggiano singled and Silvan put down a bunt hit to load the bases. Cathcart's single to center brought in a run and then Carley Nance hit an RBI single to make it 3-2. The Matadors got the final out, though, ending the game in their favor.
 
Viggiano and Silvan both went 3-4 at the top of the order, while Cathcart and Bailey Thompson added two hits apiece. Smith threw 5.2 innings, giving up three hits and no earned runs. She struck out six Matadors.

SU wraps up its weekend in California tomorrow morning. It will take on Nevada with first pitch slated for 10 a.m. at Pacific.
