SEATTLE – Seattle University women's basketball ran away from Chicago State on its way to an 80-51 win on Saturday afternoon. SU held the Cougars to 27.6 percent field-goal shooting in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) game at the Redhawk Center.

"It was important for us to get a bounceback win today," said Coach Suzy Barcomb. "We had our chances against Kansas City on Thursday and we were dialed in today. We wanted to establish inside and create some chaos with our pressure."

Joana Alves did her best to make sure the Redhawks (7-8, 1-1 WAC) made quick work of the Cougars on Saturday. The senior scored 13 points on 5-7 shooting to go with three rebounds in the first period, as SU jumped out to a 26-8 lead through 10 minutes.

Alves scored on the Redhawks' first trip, and after two CSU foul shots, Alves sank a jumper. Her layup made it 6-2 and then Alves set up a Chinwe Ezeonu basket, as the hosts took an 8-2 lead after just 2:17 of play. Ezeonu scored again and then Courtney Murphy made a three-pointer. A Kamira Sanders lay-in gave SU a 15-2 margin and forced a Cougar timeout.

CSU got back within eight later in the quarter, but the Redhawks hit the pedal and capped the frame on a 10-0 run. Alves swished a three from the top of the key and then made a two-point jumper for a 21-8 difference. Alves followed with a pair of free throws and McKenzi Williams hit a triple with just over a minute remaining in the quarter, giving Seattle U a commanding 18-point lead.

The second period saw more of the same for SU, as Sanders and Williams patrolled the floor and made things difficult for the Chicago State offense. Olivia Crawford made a layup and Sanders finished in the lane. Williams stole the ball and went in for a lay-in with 6:19 left in the half. Leilani Peat blocked a shot that led to another Sanders layup for a 36-15 advantage. After a Murphy jumper, Williams tallied two more steals, with the second setting up a Sanders basket. Sanders then dished to an open Georgia Kehoe layup for a 26-point margin. Sanders scored again and the Redhawks grabbed a 44-20 halftime cushion.

The third frame was a high-scoring one, as both offenses penetrated and either scored or drew fouls consistently. Ezeonu and Sanders both connected inside as the margin remained around 20. Murphy and Sanders each converted foul shots and then Kehoe made a layup. Crawford drove and scored for a 62-34 lead late in the period. The visitors tried to make a move and trimmed their deficit to 22 after 30 minutes.

SU harassed CSU in the fourth, allowing just eight points in the final frame. Carla Bieg sank a three and Makenna Schoenhofer finished a layup inside to highlight the Redhawks' offense down the stretch.

Seattle U held the Cougars to 16-58 shooting from the field, a season-best effort by the Redhawks. It also contained CSU to 2-13 accuracy from deep. SU caused 23 turnovers as well.

Sanders recorded 18 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and two steals on the day. Alves put up 17 points and seven boards, while Murphy contributed 13 points. Williams added nine points and five steals off the bench.

The Redhawks hit the road for their next three games, starting with a date at Utah Valley on Saturday, Jan. 11. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m. Pacific at UVU.
