CHICAGO – On less than 40 hours rest and coming off a triple overtime affair in Kansas City Thursday night, Seattle U men's basketball overcame a sluggish start to run away with an 86-54 Western Athletic Conference win at Chicago State Saturday afternoon.
The win moved the Redhawks to 8-9 on the season and an even 1-1 in conference play. It also handed Seattle U its first true road win of the year following an 0-6 start.
The Cougars (4-13, 0-2 WAC) opened the game with a 12-1 spurt inside the first five minutes of play. But the Redhawks would find their legs, sparked by Mattia Da Campo. The senior came off the bench to hit back-to-back threes for SU's first field goals. He added a huge offensive rebound that led to a Myles Carter layup, and the Redhawks were off and rolling.
A Terrell Brown three at the 11:21 mark gave Seattle U its first lead, 15-14, and the side would not look back, outscoring Chicago State 26-8 over the remainder of the frame.
The charge was led by the Redhawks' three-point shooting as they hit 9-of-21 in the half (43 percent). They would also go 8-of-11 from the free-throw line to help build the lead.
The Cougars would score first in the second half, but Seattle U put together a 7-0 run that ballooned the lead to 22, 56-34, just inside 13:30 to play. The Redhawks would lead by as many as 33 points as they cruised to victory.
Da Campo led the Redhawks with a career-high 18 points to go along with eight rebounds. Brown and Delante Jones added 14 points each while Rip Economou chipped in nine points on three three-pointers.
Seattle U finished with a season-high 14 threes and also shot a stellar 20-for-22 from the charity stripe.
Xavier Johnson paced Chicago State with 18 points before fouling out late in the second half.
The Redhawks return to Seattle to begin a three-game WAC homestand on Saturday, Jan. 11 against Utah Valley. Tip-off from the Redhawk Center is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game will stream live on the WAC Digital Network.
