Kansas City, Mo. – The start of Western Athletic Conference play was a wild one Thursday night in Kansas City, Mo., as Seattle U men's basketball and Kansas City battled through an extra 15 minutes of action at the Swinney Center. Ultimately, it was the home team to come out the victor as the Redhawks were defeated 90-86.
Morgan Means finished the night with a team-high 21 points for the Redhawks (7-9, 0-1 WAC) and played nearly the entire 55 minutes before fouling out with three second remaining. Terrell Brown added 20 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out with 3:52 remaining in the final OT period.
Aaron Nettles chipped in a season-high 17 points in his first start of the year while Riley Grigsby had 15 points and Myles Carter added 11.
"Credit both teams, that's as good as college sports gets," said Head Coach Jim Hayford. "They made some crazy shots to force the two overtimes. Our team played with tremendous heart."
The Redhawks led 33-23 at halftime, after using a 19-7 run to close out the frame. Roles reversed in the second half as the Roos (8-7, 1-0 WAC) opened with an 18-7 run capped by a Rob Whitfield three that gave the home team a 41-40 lead with 12:22 to play. Kansas City would extend its lead to as many as seven before Seattle U battled back.
Jordan Giles scored on a layup for the Roos to make it 56-52 with 4:22 remaining. The home team would not score again in the frame as Brown sank four straight free throws to tie the game. Neither team would score over the final 3:10 of regulation, sending the game into overtime.
Momentum shifted back in the Redhawks' favor in the first overtime period as Means and Brown combined for six quick points to force a Kansas City timeout. Seattle U would lead the entire period until the final seconds as Jahshire Hardnett drained a deep three as time expired to send the game into a second OT period.
The Roos would come up with a big shot once again at the close of the second extra frame. After Brown gave Seattle U a 79-77 lead by hitting of one two free throws, Javan White would rattle home a jumper in the paint as time expired.
The teams would trade six lead changes and two ties in the third extra period. A Hardnett jumper with 1:12 to play put the Roos on top, 87-86. After the Redhawks came up empty on the ensuing possession, they were forced to foul. Whitfield would hit three of four from the line in the final 19 seconds to seal the game.
The Redhawks continue their Western Athletic Conference opening road trip on Saturday, Jan. 4, traveling to face Chicago State. Tip-off from the Jones Convocation Center is scheduled for 12 p.m. local time, 10 a.m. Pacific. The game will stream live on the WAC Digital Network.
