BOISE, IDAHO – Seattle U men's tennis competed in their second match of the weekend on Saturday evening, taking on the Idaho State Bengals in an attempt to get their first win of the season. Unfortunately for the Redhawks, the Bengals came out fresh and ready to compete, prevailing over Seattle U 6-0.
Seniors Trenton Nield and Alex Chan teamed up in doubles play, taking on the Bengals' Fynn Lohse and Lukas Ridemar in a 6-3 victory. It ended up being the lone match win for the Redhawks, as senior Adrian Alvarez-Sanabria and Lars Schmassmann lost, 2-6, to Patrik Trhac and Gary Rendek of ISU; similarly, sophomores Billy Givens-Jensen and Juan Pablo Jaramillo posted a final score of 2-6 to opponents Yohann Prinsen and Kyler Hartman.
In singles play, Givens-Jensen faced Prinsen in the number five slot, giving his all in a 2-6, 3-6 result. Nield started strong in his match against Ridemar but ultimately fell 3-6, 0-6, while Alvarez-Sanabria kept steady in his 2-6, 2-6 effort against Trhac. Jaramillo (0-6, 2-6) showed great improvement in his second set against Hartman, and Schmassmann posted a 1-6, 1-6 final versus Rendek. Chan did not finish his singles match, as the team decision had already been clinched; however, he ended the day with the upper hand against Lohse, 6-4, 4-4.
"I feel that Alex had the momentum to make big things happen for him," said Head Coach Joey Barnes. "All in all, the scores didn't really reflect how we played. We didn't give up, but things just didn't go our way.
"We have been using each match to learn and to challenge ourselves," he finished.
The Redhawks will have two weeks to take what they have learned thus far and apply it to their game, as their next match is scheduled on Feb. 7 at Montana State in Bozeman, Mont. Doubles play will begin at 9:00 a.m. PT.
