EAGLE, IDAHO – Seattle U men's tennis headed to Idaho on Friday to start their weekend slate against a powerful Boise State team. The matches at the Eagle Tennis Club were fierce, but in the end the Broncos prevailed, 7-0.
Seniors Trenton Nield and Adrian Alvarez-Sanabria both finished their matches with scores of 3-6, 4-6, against the Broncos' Kyryll Kryvchun and Simon Arca Costas, respectively. Senior Alex Chan (1-6, 2-6) gained momentum in the second set against Wyatt DeMulling of Boise State, while freshman Lars Schmassmann (2-6, 1-6) had a strong start against opponent Blake Bayldon. Sophomore Billy Givens-Jensen, playing his first singles match of the spring season, finished 1-6, 1-6 against BSU's Kemal Karagozoglu, and classmate Juan Pablo Jaramillo rounded out the field with a 1-6, 0-6 effort against Mark Papadopoulos of the Broncos.
In doubles play, Chan and Nield teamed up against the 50th-ranked doubles team in the country in Bayldon and Arca Costas, finishing 2-6 after a hard-fought battle. Alvarez-Sanabria and Schmassmann put up a similar 2-6 effort against Papadopoulos and partner Michael Bott, while Jaramillo and Givens-Jensen finished things off with a 1-6 loss to Karagozoglu and partner Ryland McDermott.
"I am proud of the team's efforts," said Head Coach Joey Barnes. "We are still very early in the season, and have a lot to work on."
Next, the Redhawks will play Idaho State in Boise, Idaho, on Jan. 25. Play begins at 4:00 p.m. PT.
