FEDERAL WAY, Wash. — Seattle U men’s swimming had a great opening day to the 71st annual Husky Invitational held at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.

The Redhawks began the day with an outright win in the 200-yard Freestyle as the quartet of Greg Raper, Isaac Parker, Connor Barringer and Tyler Goodspeed had a great start to the day winning the 200-yard Freestyle Relay with a combined time of 1:24.06. The morning session was then capped with a second-place in the 400 Medley with the team of Jaden Weiss, Jack Neton, Raper, Corona clocking in at 3:24.95.

Individually, Will Corona highlighted the morning preliminaries, as he posted a provisional time for the National Invitational Swimming Championship and qualified for the 2020 USA Swimming Futures Championships in the 200-yard IM as he touched in at 1:51.02. In addition, the performance was the sixth-best outing in program-history and best-ever by a Seattle U freshman. Corona ultimately took eighth in the finals, swimming the 200-meter course in 2:14.16.

In the 50 freestyle, four Redhawks advanced to the final event. Raper led the entourage as he clocked in at 20.73, the fourth-best time of the prelims, while Parker followed with a time of 21.05 to round out the top eight. Goodspeed and Emmett Moore also qualified. Moore’s time of 21.32 was a personal-best as he trimmed three-quarters of the second off his seed time of 22.08. All four swimmers qualified for the USA Futures Championships next summer, while Raper, Parker and Goodspeed logged provisional NISC times.

In the finals, Raper and Parker touched in at fifth and sixth respectively, with Raper posting a time of 24.25, while Parker trailed at 24.30. Goodspeed came in at 24.77, while Moore swam the 50-meter course in 26.06.

Also advancing to the finals during the first day of the Husky Invite was Juan Varela who recorded a time of 4:40.73 during the 500 freestyle. Varela followed up his prelim performance with a time of 4:16.43 in the finals.

The Redhawks resume action at the Husky Invitational on Saturday (Dec. 7) beginning at 9 am.
