MORAGA, Calif. – Seattle University men's basketball closed out non-conference play and the calendar year on Saturday at Saint Mary's, dropping an 84-58 decision to the reigning West Coast Conference champion.
The first five minutes of each half were the deciding factor for the Redhawks (7-8) as they were outscored 24-1 by the Gaels (13-2) over those 10 minutes of play.
Saint Mary's jumped out to an 11-1 lead to open the game and later used another run to push its first-half lead to 13, 21-8, with 10:49 to go.
A pair of threes by Mattia Da Campo and a jumper by Morgan Means trimmed the spread back down to seven, 23-16, and the Redhawks would eventually close out the half with an 8-0 spurt to trail 36-30 going into the break.
But the second half would begin in near deja vu fashion as the Gaels scored the first 13 points of the frame, and would push the lead to 20, 56-36 with 12:25 to play.
Seattle U would eventually find its offense, but could not match the Saint Mary's fire power. The Gaels shot just shy of 60 percent from the field in the second half, and 55 percent for the game. The Redhawks finished the night shooting 39 percent from the field and were just 5-of-18 from three.
Terrell Brown led all scorers with 22 points, while also adding seven rebounds and three assists. Means finished with 11 points, six rebounds and six assists, while Myles Carter and Da Campo chipped in nine points each.
Dan Fotu paced Saint Mary's with 17 points. Alex Yucas had 16 points, Jordan Ford added 15 and Malik Fitts chipped in 10.
The Redhawks open the New Year and Western Athletic Conference play on Thursday, Jan. 2, traveling to face Kansas City. Tip-off from the Swinney Center is scheduled for 7 p.m. local time, 5 p.m. Pacific. The game will stream live on the WAC Digital Network.
