SEATTLE – Seattle University men's basketball gave themselves and all Redhawk fans an early Christmas present Monday afternoon, earning a convincing 79-57 win over visiting Long Beach State.

The victory moved the Redhawks to 7-7 on the season and served as a big rebound from a disappointing performance two days prior.

"Saturday night was hard on all of us," Head Coach Jim Hayford said. "We don't like losing on our home court. So we had a good team discussion that night, pulled the seams on what keeps us all together which is love for one another. We studied how well we played for 35 minutes at UW and early versus Florida A&M, and had a really good practice.

"This is how this team can play," said Hayford. "These are really good basketball players. So we have to keep pushing to that point. This was a really good team win."

Seattle U never trailed, and led by as many as 31 points, in the runaway win. A stellar defensive first half propelled the home team to a 44-24 advantage at the break, and they would cruise from there.

Terrell Brown led all scorers with 17 points, to go along with eight assists. He was one of five Redhawks to finish in double figures. Morgan Means finished just shy of a triple double, collecting 12 points, nine assists and eight rebounds. Myles Carter added 13 points, Delante Jones had 11 and Riley Grigsby chipped in 10.

Joshua Morgan had 11 points off the bench for the Beach, while Chance Hunter added 10 and two others scored nine apiece.

A 6-1 spurt to open the game had the Redhawk on top early, and a Means three off a Brown dish made it 14-5 with 14:42 to go in the first. The teams would trade buckets over the next few minutes before a Jones triple opened up the first double-digit lead of the game, 21-11, at the 10:$3 mark.

The Beach (4-10) would briefly trim the spread down to six with a 5-1 spurt, but the Redhawks began to pour it on with a 16-2 run that opened up a 38-18 advantage with 3:27 to go. Brown and Means would combine for the Redhawks final six points of the frame to take a 44-24 lead into the half.

The spread would balloon in the second half as a 16-5 run to open the frame put the Redhawks on top, 60-29 with 12:28 to play. Long Beach State would get no closer than the final spread for the balance of the game.

Seattle U's defensive effort included a season-high 13 steals on 23 total LBSU turnovers. The Redhawks would earn a 28-8 advantage in points off turnovers. They held the Beach to just 35.8 percent from the field and 25 percent from three, including a dismal 1-for-10 from three performance in the first half.

With nine total players scoring, Seattle U shot 42 percent for the game, 32 percent from three and 12-for-14 from the charity stripe.

The Redhawks break from action until Dec. 28, wrapping up non-conference play on the road at West Coast Conference member Saint Mary's. Tip-off from McKeon Pavilion in Moraga, Calif., is set for 5 p.m.
