No. 22 Huskies Pull Away Late

For the better part of the night, Seattle University men's basketball played toe-to-toe with 22nd-ranked Washington, including holding a lead at the half, scoring 16 points off turnovers and earning an 11-5 advantage on the offensive boards. But the Huskies showed why they are a top-25 team down the stretch, outscoring the Redhawks 23-3 in the final five minutes to claim an 81-59 final at Alaska Airlines Arena Tuesday.

SEATTLE – For the better part of the night, Seattle University men's basketball played toe-to-toe with 22nd-ranked Washington, including holding a lead at the half, scoring 16 points off turnovers and earning an 11-5 advantage on the offensive boards. But the Huskies showed why they are a top-25 team down the stretch, outscoring the Redhawks 23-3 in the final five minutes to claim an 81-59 final at Alaska Airlines Arena Tuesday.

After holding a 33-32 lead at the break, the game would remain no more than a two-possession spread through the majority of the second half. With the Huskies (8-2) leading 58-52, Terrell Brown knocked down a jumper to make it 58-54 UW with 5:32 remaining.

But things would begin to unravel for the Redhawks (6-6) as UW went inside to Isaiah Stewart for a layup and the foul, then back to Stewart for two more buckets, quickly opening up a 65-54 advantage.

Aaron Nettles would drain a three from the wing with 3:18 to go, briefly halting the Husky charge, but it was all UW down the stretch.

"The last five minutes got away from us so the score doesn't do justice for what the game was," said Head Coach Jim Hayford. "We weren't making shots in the second half and once Jordan fouled out, and Myles was hurt, they took it to us inside and that's how it got away from us. UW is a top-25 team and they really played like a top-25 team in those final minutes."

Brown led the Redhawks with 21 points, including 15 in a stellar first half that saw Seattle U use patient offense, score nine points off of nine Husky turnovers and hold a 19-14 edge on the boards.

Joining Brown in double-figures was Morgan Means, who finished with 13 points. Riley Grigsby added eight points and Nettles had six on a pair of threes.

"I see a really good team that we need to build on," Hayford said. "You can see that it's there, but we have make shots and finish."

Washington was paced by Stewart's 27 points and 13 rebounds. Quade Green added 20 points and Jaden McDaniels finished with 10. The Huskies shot nearly 70 percent from the field in the second half, scoring 22 of their 49 points in the paint. They also hit 5-8 from three in the period.

Seattle U returns to the Redhawk Center on Saturday, Dec. 21, hosting Florida A&M at 7 p.m.
