KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Rachel Bowler and Jessie Ray of Seattle University women's soccer have been named 2019 United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-West Region. The seniors led the Redhawks back to the NCAA Tournament this season.
To qualify for the squads, student-athletes must earn at least a 3.3 cumulative grade point average.
Bowler, a defender from Honolulu, Hawai'i, won WAC Defensive Player of the Year after a standout senior season. She was key to an SU backline that allowed just nine goals in WAC action. While starting all 22 matches, Bowler led the team in minutes played with 2,008 in 2019. The digital design major has a 3.4 GPA at Seattle U.
Ray claimed WAC Offensive Player of the Year. The senior out of Portland, Oregon, led the Redhawks with nine goals and nine assists, both career highs. She scored in overtime to lift the Redhawks to the WAC Tournament Championship, winning tournament MVP. Ray is a cell and molecular biology major with a 3.9 GPA.
The pair gives SU five United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-West Region choices in the last three years. Isabelle Butterfield (2018), Hannah Carrothers (2017), and Stephanie Spiekerman (2017) landed spots previously.
In 2019, Seattle U won the WAC regular-season and tournament titles on its way to a fifth NCAA Tournament appearance since 2013. Bowler and Ray headline a terrific senior class that won a total of five WAC crowns and helped SU make three NCAA Tournaments.
