SPOKANE, WASH. – Seattle U men’s tennis closed out their fall season yesterday, finishing play after three days at the Gonzaga Invitational despite a nasty stomach virus affecting most of the team.
“We did our best to overcome illness, and gathered ourselves together to give it a grand effort,” said Head Coach Joey Barnes.
Senior Adrian Alvarez-Sanabria was the standout player for the Redhawks, winning a singles match and a doubles match with freshman partner Lars Schmassmann.
“Adrian really has improved since last year,” said Barnes. “You can see it in his performance.”
Alvarez-Sanabria’s singles victory came in the White Singles draw against Grant Wood of Montana State, with a final score of 6-4, 6-4; later, Alvarez-Sanabria fell to Idaho’s Vivek Ramesh in the quarterfinals, 4-6, 2-6. Schmassmann also played in the White Singles bracket, losing to Northern Colorado’s Josh Gieberts (2-6, 1-6), while sophomore Jim Bauer faced Josh Watkins of Montana in a 1-6, 1-6 match. The Red Singles draw featured junior Emilio Monroy, who finished 3-6, 2-6 against Gonzaga’s Brandon Park, and senior Alex Chan, who fell 3-6, 0-6 to Christian Damgaard Qvist of Montana State. Finally, in the Blue Singles draw, junior Colton Weeldreyer only just lost to Gonzaga’s Kyle Everly, 3-6, 4-6.
The doubles win for Alvarez-Sanabria and Schmassmann was hard-fought, with a final score of 8-5 against Montana State’s Manuel Monteiro and Grant Wood. In the next round, Northern Colorado’s pair of Adolfo Arroyo and Nick Wade needed a tiebreaker point in order to bring the Redhawk duo down, finishing at 8-7(7). Senior Trenton Nield also teamed up with Chan to face Gonzaga’s tandem of Bryan Husin and Matt Perkins, battling well in a 4-8 final.
With the completion of tournament play, Coach Barnes looks ahead to the spring season. “It’s a tough road ahead of us, with conference match play coming up,” he said. “We will need to prepare ourselves physically and mentally.”
