STANFORD, CALIF. – Seattle U men’s tennis kicked off their fall slate today at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Men’s Northwest Regional Championships, held this year at the Family Tennis Center at Stanford University.

The tournament will last until Oct. 29, with entries from California, Eastern Washington, Fresno, Gonzaga, Oregon, Pacific, Portland, Portland State, Sacramento State, San Francisco, Santa Clara, Seattle U, St. Mary’s, Stanford, UC Davis and Washington competing in singles and doubles play.

On the first day, seniors Alex Chan and Adrian Alvarez-Sanabria teamed up to defeat Eastern Washington’s Martin Bats and Jeremy Mueller, defeating them 8-3 to move on to the round of 32 in the doubles bracket. Juniors Emilio Monroy and Colton Weeldreyer impressed in their matchup against Oregon’s Brandon Lam and Luke Vandecasteele, battling hard in a 6-8 final. Sophomore Billy Givens-Jensen and freshman Lars Schmassmann also entered the doubles field, but were ultimately defeated 0-8 by Samuel Felt and Matthew Hollingworth of Gonzaga.

In championship singles play, Chan had the most impressive showing for Seattle U in a 4-6, 3-6 bout against Gonzaga’s Oliver Anderson, while Monroy also gave Boris Reckow of St. Mary’s some trouble in a 2-6, 2-6 final. Alvarez-Sanabria finished at 1-6, 2-6 against California’s Kent Hunter, Weeldreyer posted a 2-6, 1-6 match against UC Davis’ Daniel Landa, and Schmassmann debuted for the Redhawks against Otto Holtari of Portland State, 1-6, 1-6. Finally, sophomore Jim Bauer (0-6, 2-6) faced Carlos Rodriguez of Sacramento State, and Givens-Jensen (0-6, 1-6) went up against Dariush Jalali of UC Davis.
