DENVER --- The Western Athletic Conference office announced Tuesday, that Seattle U volleyball was tabbed eighth in the 2019 WAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll.
The Redhawks, which received 13 total points, qualified for their sixth consecutive WAC postseason tournament with a 4-12 mark. In the preseason poll, SU trailed Grand Canyon by nine points and was three points better than Chicago State.
Reigning regular-season champion NM State topped the preseason predictions with 60 points and four first-place votes. Utah Valley trailed in second with three first-place nods and 55 points, while Kansas City followed with 52 points and two first-place votes. California Baptist and UT Rio Grand Valley tied at fourth with 41 points each. CSU Bakersfield meanwhile took sixth with 26 points.
With 11 of 15 players considered underclassmen, the youthful Seattle U lineup will look to extend its consecutive WAC Tournament appearance streak to seven seasons. The squad however is highlighted with experience as redshirt-junior Rachel Stark and junior Tijana Milojevic return for 2019. Stark paced the Redhawks last season in kill (254) and points (303.0), while Milojevic anchored the backline as libero and led the defense with 493 digs. Sophia Sanchez and Julia Queiroz meanwhile headline a deep and competitive crop of underclassmen. As freshmen last season both appeared in north of 100 sets while being among the top four in team leaders in most major categories.
Seattle U opens the season later today at Portland with an exhibition match at 1 pm, but will officially start the year on August 30 against Southern Mississippi as part of the Denver Classic.
