SPOKANE, WASH. – Seattle U men’s tennis had an unusually long day on Saturday, as they participated in a rare doubleheader against Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash. Ultimately, the Bulldogs swept the Redhawks in both matches, 7-0, 7-0.
In the first contest of the day, junior Adrian Sanabria had the tightest singles matchup, taking his opponent to a tiebreaker in a 1-6, 6-7(5) loss. Classmate Arshak Ghazaryan (2-6, 5-7) also performed well, while fellow junior Trenton Nield held his own in a 3-6, 3-6 bout. Sophomore Colton Weeldreyer (0-6, 2-6), junior Alex Chan (1-6, 3-6) and sophomore Emilio Monroy (4-6, 1-6) also competed in singles play. Doubles featured some tighter matches, with Monroy and Weeldreyer taking their opponents to a 4-6 final and the duo of Chan and freshman Billy Givens-Jensen posting a score of 3-6.
The Redhawks’ second contest against Gonzaga was much the same. Nield once again finished his singles match at 3-6, 3-6, while Chan went 3-6, 1-6 and Monroy finished 1-6, 4-6. Ghazaryan (2-6, 2-6), Weeldreyer (0-6, 2-6) and Givens-Jensen (1-6, 0-6) founded out the singles rotation for Seattle U. Doubles play showed more promising results; Ghazaryan and Nield took their Bulldog challengers to a 4-6 final, as did Monroy and Weeldreyer. Sanabria and Chan teamed up for the no. 3 match in an eventual 1-6 loss.
“Gonzaga is a strong program, and they certainly showed that today,” said Assistant Coach Chris Borden. “We will take what we can from these matches, and work on those things moving forward.”
Seattle U stays in Spokane for another day as they face Whitworth College on Sunday morning at 10:30 AM PT.
