DENVER – Joana Alves of Seattle University women’s basketball has been named 2018-19 All-Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Second Team. The junior put together her best season as a Redhawk, leading SU in scoring while starting all 29 games.

"Joana has made great strides from last year," said Coach Suzy Barcomb. "Her biggest growth has been from the start of this year as she gained more confidence and in-game experience."

The Lisbon, Portugal, native averaged 13.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. She led the Redhawks in field-goal percentage (47.1), free throw percentage (79.1), and blocked shots (28). Alves stands third in the WAC in free throw percentage and fifth in blocks.

Alves recorded a career-high 32 points at Kansas City on Feb. 21, setting a Division I program record for points in a road game. She earned WAC Player of the Week honors at the end of 2018, putting up 29 points and 12 rebounds at UC Irvine on Dec. 29.

The Redhawks open the WAC Tournament against UTRGV on Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at The Orleans Arena.
