SEATTLE – Seattle University men’s soccer continued its string of stellar seasons in 2018. The Redhawks extended their streak of 11-win seasons to six straight years as SU celebrated Pete Fewing’s 25th season as head coach.
In 2018, Fewing coached his 500th career game on Sept. 9 against CSUN. He followed with his 300th career win, as the Redhawks beat CSU Bakersfield, 2-0, on Oct. 13.
Seattle U is one of just four Division I programs to win at least 11 games in each of the last six seasons. It joins Akron, Notre Dame, and Denver on the exclusive list, as the Redhawks won 13 games in 2018.
Seniors Josh Adachi, Nathan Aune, and Sergio Rivas were chosen All-WAC First Team. Adachi tallied a 1.10 goals against average in 19 starts. Aune worked through injury to score two goals and anchor the Redhawk defense. Rivas put up four goals and a team-leading nine assists on his way to claiming United Soccer Coaches All-Region recognition.
Declan McGlynn earned WAC Freshman of the Year, All-WAC Second Team, and All-WAC Freshman Team after recording a team-high six goals to go with five assists. Julian Avila-Good, a junior midfielder, claimed All-WAC Second Team recognition, while senior defender Anthony Ayala was All-WAC Honorable Mention. Hal Uderitz was an All-WAC Freshman Team selection.
After dropping its opener at New Mexico, the Redhawks bounced back with three straight home wins, including a 2-1 win over 2018 NCAA Tournament runner-up Akron on Sept. 7 at Championship Field. Gabriel Ruiz scored the game-winner late in the second half to lift SU to a key victory over the Zips.
Seattle U compiled a six-game win streak that stretched into October. It won five in a row on the road, highlighted by a 2-0 win at rival Washington on Sept. 23. Noe Meza and McGlynn both scored as SU secured the Washington Athletic Club/101 Club Cup at Husky Soccer Stadium.
The Redhawks dropped three of four, but rallied with three straight victories to close the regular season. On Oct. 28, they celebrated senior day with a 3-1 win over Incarnate Word at Championship Field. In the regular-season finale at San Jose State, Meza scored in the final minute of regulation to lift SU to a 2-1 win and clinch third place in the WAC standings.
SU suffered a heartbreaking end in the WAC Tournament, as SJSU advanced in penalty kicks at Championship Field.
Fewing will have to replace a terrific senior class, but SU has depth across the field and will be in position to compete for the WAC crown in 2019.
