EDINBURG, Texas – Seattle University women’s soccer played to a scoreless draw at UTRGV Sunday. Ariana Romero recorded a career-high 10 saves as SU clinched a Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament berth for the seventh straight season.
“The team continues to improve,” said Coach Julie Woodward. “Our mentality and ability to compete has been great the last few games. On the weekend, I was impressed with the consistency and play of (Kelsey) Vogel, Hannah (Carrothers) and Olivia (Ovenell) especially but great fighting performances by many. It was a tough weekend with the travel and facing a team on Sunday that did not play Friday. Overall, a good weekend for us.”
The Redhawks blanked the Vaqueros for 110 minutes at a steamy UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex. With the tie, Seattle U picked up its 13th point in WAC play and remained in second place in the standings. It has secured a postseason spot and will play for first place against Kansas City next weekend.
Romero was busy for much of the match Sunday and came up with perhaps her best save in the final minute of the first overtime session. Off a UTRGV corner kick, a shot came in through traffic that Romero had to range and leap to corral and send the game to a second OT.
SU (6-7-3, 4-1-1 WAC) generated 15 shots, with five going on goal. It held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks on the day.
Seattle U returns home for senior day a week from today. It hosts Kansas City in a key WAC contest on Oct. 21 at Championship Field.
