NEWS AND NOTES

  • Seattle U beat two-time defending Big Sky Tournament champion Eastern Washington, 3-0, on Aug. 20. Jessie Ray scored two goals and assisted on another as the Redhawks opened their eight-game homestand with a victory.
  • Emily Bringgold scored for SU in the win over Eastern Washington, notching her first career goal as a Redhawk.
  • Seattle U began the regular season with a 3-1 setback at No. 21 Washington State on Aug. 17.
  • Jessie Ray finished a header off a Laura Hooper assist in the 13th minute to account for the Redhawks’ goal at WSU.
  • Cal State Fullerton lost, 3-0, at Washington on Friday night. The Titans claimed a 5-1 win over St. Mary’s on Aug. 19. Nano Oronoz posted a hat trick in the win last weekend. They lost, 1-0 in overtime to BYU, to open its regular season.
  • Fullerton won the 2017 Big West Tournament. It lost nine seniors from that title team and has been voted to place third in the 2018 preseason poll.
  • The Redhawks were voted to take third in the WAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll. Defenders Rachel Bowler and Hannah Carrothers were named to the Preseason All-WAC Team. Carrothers and forward Jessie Ray were 2017 All-WAC Second Team selections.
  • Julie Woodward enters her 22nd season as Seattle U head coach. She has guided the Redhawks to four WAC regular season titles, three WAC Tournament crowns, and eight straight winning seasons.
  • Last season, SU won nine games and advanced to the WAC Championship game for the fifth straight year. It will have to replace nine seniors who graduated. The Redhawks have a 12-player freshman class in 2018.
