SEATTLE – Seattle University Athletics has announced the hiring of three new staff members to the Student-Athlete Support Services team for the 2018-19 school year. Sarah Pfau has been named Director of Sports Medicine, Katie Qualls is the new Assistant Director for Academics & Student-Athlete Support, and Andrew Schultz has moved into a full-time Athletic Trainer position after spending two years on staff as a graduate assistant.
“I am very excited about the caliber of people who are joining our Student-Athletes Services team,” said Associate Athletic Director for Compliance and Student-Athlete Services Eric Guerra. “Each one reflects the mission and values of Seattle University in the work they do and the way they care for students. They enable us to enhance our services and elevate the student-athlete experience.”
Pfau brings a wealth of experience both from collegiate athletic programs and the private sector. She previously served as an athletic trainer on staff at UCLA and St. Joseph’s Hospital in Anaheim. Most recently, Pfau worked as a certified athletic trainer/rehab manager at Tangelo in Seattle for the last two years. Prior to that, she worked at California Baptist University for three years, working primarily with women’s soccer and baseball. She graduated from Liberty University and earned her Master’s degree from Azusa Pacific.
"I am honored to be a part of the Redhawks' success," said Pfau. "I am looking forward to incorporating my brand of passion and commitment to excellence as we continue to build the Sports Medicine Program with a progressive, whole-person approach. Witnessing the intentional crafting of Seattle University's staff has been inspiring, and makes me proud to be a member of a dynamic, forward-thinking team."
“Sarah is an outstanding communicator and brings an innovative sports medicine acumen,” said Guerra. “Her authenticity and long-standing commitment to caring for the whole person make her a fantastic fit to lead our sports medicine program.”
Qualls spent the last two years as the Assistant Director of Academic Services at Washington State. She previously worked at the University of Washington after claiming her Master’s degree from WSU. Qualls graduated from Ouachita Baptist (Arkansas) University with a 4.0 grade point average.
“We are extremely excited to bring Katie on board,” said Assistant Athletic Director for Academics and Student-Athlete Support Dan Scheid. “Her experience in a similar role at Washington State University will greatly benefit her as she works to support our amazing student-athletes and be another resource for our coaches.”
Schultz earned his Master’s degree from Seattle U in June. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin before arriving in Seattle. In his tenure as a graduate assistant at SU, he worked primarily with baseball, women’s soccer, and cross country.
