SEATTLE – (May 22) The Redhawks have earned the fourth seed in the 2018 WAC Baseball Tournament and will open play against fifth-seed Northern Colorado on Wednesday, May 23 at 3 p.m. A win would pit Seattle U against either top seed Grand Canyon or second seed Sacramento State, depending on the seed of the other opening round game. A first-round loss would send the Redhawks into the losers bracket for an 11 a.m. Thursday first pitch, but still with an opportunity to play back around in the double-elimination tournament.

WAC TOURNAMENT HISTORY

  • Seattle U is 6-7 in WAC Tournament play since it made its first appearance in 2014.
  • The Redhawks went 1-1 in 2014, 2-2 in 2015 and 2016, and 1-2 in 2017.
  • Utah Valley defeated Seattle U in 2016 in the championship game to earn the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Seattle U was the one-seed entering the tournament after winning a program record 37 games.
  • There have been five different winners in the tournament in each of the past six years, with Sacramento State (2014, 2017) being the lone repeater.

NEWS AND NOTES

  • Seattle U closed out the regular season by dropping three straight games to WAC regular-season champ Grand Canyon.
  • The Redhawks earned their 30th win of the season on May 5 at Sacramento State, marking the third 30-win season during the nine years since the program was resurrected in 2010. The program record for win is 37, set in 2016.
  • Tarik Skubal is 7-2 with a 4.32 ERA following a win at Utah Valley on May 12. The victory marked 20 for his career, making him the sole career record holder for wins in program history. To date this season, the junior lefty has 96 strikeouts in 73 innings.
  • Freshman Justin Mazzone concluded the regular-season with a team-high .350 batting average with 36 hits, including five doubles and two home runs.
  • Sean Sutton is batting .339 with 60 hits, including nine doubles and five home runs, and leads the team with 48 RBIs, which is also a Redhawk single-season record.
  • Dalton Hurd is batting .320 batting with a team-high 65 hits, including 17 doubles, one triple and seven homers. He also ranks second on the team with 41 RBIs.
  • Austin Lively leads the team with 47 runs scored - a Redhawk single-season record.
  • The Redhawks have 137 total extra-base hits on the year, including 92 doubles, 13 triples and 32 home runs. Dalton Hurd has seven of those homers while Sean Sutton has five, Lucas Denney and Curtis Perrin have four eachand Jake Cosgrove has three. All told, 10 Redhawks have hit at least one home run.
  • Jake Prizina is 7-1, to go along with one save and a 4.00 ERA in 14 starts and 18 total appearances. The junior lefty has 86 strikeouts while his 16 walks allowed in 92.1 innings ranks second in the WAC.
  • Closer Zach Wolf also continues to dominate. At 4-0 with nine saves and a 2.72 ERA in 27 appearances, Wolf has fanned 54 batters in 39.2 innings. He holds opponents to a .193 average.
