DENVER - (April 26) Kyra Jung earned three honors Thursday night as she was named the Western Athletic Conference women’s tennis Freshman of the Year, All-WAC singles second team and doubles second team. Jung partnered with Hannah Gianan for the doubles honor, and Kelli Woodman and Michelle Lui were also named to the All-WAC doubles second team, while Lui also earned singles second team.

"Congrats to all four of our ladies for their awards and recognition,” head coach Adam Reeb said. “All four ladies are so deserving of these awards, and we are just so excited and proud of them."

Jung, a freshman from Columbus, Ohio, led the Redhawks with 17 overall wins and 11 in dual matches. She collected nine of her 11 dual match wins in the third flight and finished 2-0 in the second flight.

”I'm so excited and happy for Kyra to be named Freshman of the Year," Reeb said. “She is so deserving of this award as she makes such an impact in our program both on and off court.  She is a tremendous player but an even better person.”

Jung and Gianan, a freshman from Camas, Wash. were SU’s second-leading doubles team with seven wins and two of them in conference to earn doubles team second team honors. Overall, Jung won 12 doubles matches and eight in dual matches, while Gianan collected 13 overall wins and 10 in dual matches.

“Kyra and Hannah have developed into a great doubles team and they have great chemistry together,” Reeb said. “They have the ability to dominate in doubles which is not easy to do in their first year of college tennis.”

Lui, a senior from Bellevue, Wash. and Woodman, a redshirt senior from Denver, served as the Redhawks’ top doubles team. They paired up to win 10 matches, all of which came at the #1 spot, competing against the opponents’ top doubles teams. They also had a winning record in conference matches, going 3-2 in 2018.

“Michelle and Kelli have been playing together for so long and complement each other so well,” Reeb said. “They consistently get the other team's best doubles shot each match, and they have been so solid for us in getting their court most of the time.”

Lui was also named to the All-WAC singles second team. She played all of her matches at the top spot for the Redhawks, where she won 10 dual matches and also notched 14 wins overall.

These four and the Redhawks will play in the WAC championship in Mesa, Ariz. this weekend. They will start with the quarter-final on Friday at 9 a.m. against New Mexico State, and the winner will play the #1 seed UTRGV on Saturday at 9 a.m. The final will be played at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
