BELLEVUE, Wash. – (Apr. 21) One day after pounding out 13 hits for 12 runs, Seattle University baseball's offense was stymied by UTRGV as the Vaqueros took a 6-2 final Saturday afternoon at Bannerwood Park.
A pitcher's duel early, the Redhawks (24-11, 7-4 WAC) broke through for a pair of runs in the third on a Jake Cosgrove two-RBI single. But the Vaqueros (19-20, 5-6 WAC) would answer late, tying the game 2-2 in the seventh and going ahead with a four-run eighth.
Jake Prizina worked his way through six scoreless innings before running into some trouble in the seventh. He surrendered a single to Tyler Torres to open the inning, but got the first out on an Aaron Dees strikeout. He quickly recorded out No. 2 in a fly out, but a single and walk would follow and Prizina gave way to Nathan Bonck.
Bonck would give up a two-RBI single before closing out the inning with a strikeout of Coleman Grubbs. After the Redhawk sophomore surrendered a walk and a double in the top of the eighth, Zach Wolf was called in from the pen. Wolf would surrender a two-RBI double down the left field line that sent UTRGV's go-ahead runs across the plate. The Vaqueros added a two-run homer before the inning was over.
Seattle U could not get a runner on base in the final two frames as a six-game win streak was snapped.
Bonck (1-1) took the loss for the Redhawks while UTRGV starter Jorge Flores earned the win after striking out five and allowing Seattle U just five hits over seven innings.
The three-game WAC series between Seattle U and UTRGV concludes Sunday with a 12 p.m. first pitch at Bannerwood Park.
