SEATTLE – (April 6) The Seattle University women’s tennis team played their best match of the season to beat New Mexico State 6-1 in a Western Athletic Conference match on Friday afternoon at the Amy Yee Tennis Center.
The Redhawks came out ready to get their first conference win and did just that. It all started with fighting to get the early doubles point with two victories. Hannah Gianan and Kyra Jung got it started with a 6-3 win in the second flight, but the Aggies tied it with a 6-3 win in the third flight. It all came down to the first court where the defending WAC doubles team of the week, Michelle Lui and Kelli Woodman were playing. The pair won the match 6-4 and clinched the doubles point for SU.
Singles play didn’t start the Redhawks’ way, as the Aggies took the first match at #5, but SU battled on the remaining courts and won all five matches. Defending WAC singles player of the week, Gianan won her match 6-4, 6-2 in the second flight, while Lui beat the Aggies’ #1 opponent 6-3, 6-4. Jung, Woodman and Lily-Ana Kreutzer all won their match to clinch the 6-1 conference win.
“Today was our best match of the year by far,” head coach Adam Reeb said. “Our energy and intensity was awesome, and it was just a great team effort. So proud of these ladies. The weekend has just begun though, so we’ve got to regroup and be ready for a tough Chicago State team tomorrow.”
The match against Chicago State is set for tomorrow at noon at the Amy Yee Tennis Center. SU will then end the weekend with a match against Grand Canyon on Sunday at 2 p.m.
