KANSAS CITY, Mo. – (March 29) The Seattle University men’s tennis team opened conference play against the WAC pre-season favorite, Grand Canyon, and lost 7-0 on Thursday evening.
Despite the shutout, the Redhawks were in it in most courts but just couldn’t overcome the ‘Lopes. In doubles, GCU took the first match 6-2 at #1, then 6-4 and #2, and finished with a 7-6 loss at #3.
In singles, Grand Canyon used the momentum of winning the doubles’ point to take every match to complete the shutout. Colton Weeldreyer in the third flight and Jeremiah Kalmus in the fifth flight won their first set but then lost the next two sets.
“Today’s match was a lot closer than the overall score,” head coach Adam Reeb said. “We fought hard and were right there on a lot of courts. We’ve just got to regroup and come back tomorrow even stronger. It’s another great opportunity for our team.”
The Redhawks will continue the conference schedule with a match against UMKC on Friday at 11 a.m. and then will play New Mexico State on Saturday at noon.
