VANCOUVER, Wash. - (Jan. 27) The Seattle University men’s tennis team opened the spring season with a 5-2 loss to Portland State at the Club Green Meadows Tennis Courts on Saturday afternoon.
Portland State started off the match taking the point in the doubles matches. They won flights three and one before SU’s Emilio Monroy and Matt Alderson won their match in the second flight, 7-5.
After dropping the doubles point, the Redhawks couldn’t overcome the deficit in singles. The Vikings took the first three matches at flights four, three, and one to seal the victory.
The only Redhawk wins in singles came from Colton Weeldreyer in the second flight, 6-3, 7-6, and Jeremiah Kalmus at flight five, 6-4, 7-5.
This was the team’s first spring match, and they will look to build from this loss.
“The boys played well once they got settled in, but we were a little too slow to get started,” assistant coach Chris Borden said. “Moving forward we will look to get off to better starts and go from there.”
The Redhwaks are back in action Friday evening when they travel to Spokane to face Gonzaga at 5 p.m. at the Stevens Center Tennis Courts.
