SEATTLE -  (Jan. 21) The Seattle University women’s tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Eastern Washington Sunday morning at the Tennis Center at Sand Point.

After losing a close match to South Dakota Friday night, the Redhawks couldn’t recover quickly enough to win the doubles point. They dropped the first match on court two, but then Hannah Gianan and Kali McCollister won their match on court three to make it 1-1. It all came down to court #1, where Michelle Lui and Kelli Woodman took it to a tie breaker, but ended up losing the match 7-6 to drop the doubles point.

Then in singles, Eastern Washington took care of business. They took the first two matches at court four and three, before Gianan was able to break the Eagles at court #2 with a strong 6-4, 6-2 win. Lui followed Gianan with a win of her own on the first court. The score was one set apiece, but Lui won the third and decisive set 6-3 for the win.

The Eagles finished off the match with wins on the last two courts to seal their second victory of the season.

“It was a tough match today,” said head coach Adam Reeb. “All credit to Eastern. They played well and deserved the win. We had great fight and effort, we just have to keep our mentality throughout the match from start to finish.”

Despite the early 0-2 start to the season, SU knows it’s just the beginning and are looking to improve.

“We will look to improve upon that and take the positives from this weekend and just work to keep getting better. We’re excited for the opportunity to head to California next weekend and hopefully get in all our matches outdoors.

The Redhawks will play three matches in California next weekend. They will play Stanislaus State on Friday, the Academy of Art University on Saturday, and the University of the Pacific on Sunday.
