PHOENIX – (Oct. 31) Stephanie Spiekerman of Seattle University women’s soccer has been named All-Western Athletic Conference (WAC) First Team for the 2017 season, the conference announced at its awards banquet Tuesday. Hannah Carrothers and Jessie Ray were both selected All-WAC Second Team.

"I'm really proud of these three players," said Coach Julie Woodward. "There's so many exceptional players in our conference and this is a tremendous honor. They have been playing really well especially as of late and I'm looking forward to seeing their contributions in the tournament. They are simply exceptional people, great as students and as athletes. I am so happy they are a part of our team."

Spiekerman started all 18 matches this season, moving from defense to midfield midway through the WAC schedule. The senior scored the game-winner in a 1-0 win over CSU Bakersfield on Oct. 20. Spiekerman assisted on a pair of goals as well. She was key in SU’s seven shutouts in 2017.

The native of Seattle has now earned two All-WAC First Team nods in her career. She was also an All-WAC Second Team in 2014 and 2015.

Carrothers has been a vital cog in the Redhawks’ success this year. The junior defender appeared in 14 games, distributing four assists. She had two assists in SU’s 5-3 win at Idaho on Sept. 4. The native of Vancouver, British Columbia, was a strong presence in six Redhawk shutouts in 2017.

Carrothers was a Preseason All-WAC choice this year.

Ray closed 2016 on a high note and followed with a stellar sophomore campaign in 2017. She tied for the team lead with seven goals and also dished out three assists. Ray scored a pair of goals and claimed an assist at Portland State on Sept. 17. The Portland, Oregon, native assisted on goals against New Mexico State and Utah Valley in WAC play.

Seattle U plays New Mexico State in the first round of the WAC Championship tomorrow. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at GCU Stadium.
