SEATTLE – (Oct. 14) Seattle University women’s soccer fell New Mexico State, 2-1, Saturday afternoon. Isabelle Butterfield scored in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) contest at Championship Field.
Coach Julie Woodward's squad held a 27-5 advantage in shots, but the Redhawks were unable to rally late in the match.
SU (5-8-2, 1-2-1 WAC) was dominant in the first half, outshooting the visitors, 10-1, and dictating the tempo throughout the frame. The Aggies (8-7-2, 2-1-1 WAC) scored on a counter attack in the 17thminute, taking a 1-0 lead.
Seattle U continued to pound the net as the half went on. Jessie Ray made a run down the right alley and then sent a bounding ball into the box. Butterfield one-touched a shot into the back of the net, tying the match at 29:48.
To start the second half, the Redhawks came out strong, questioning the Aggie defense with four early shots. The visitors kept it even into the 62nd minute, though, when NM State found a go-ahead goal.
SU controlled the closing portion of the game, putting pressure on the Aggies as time ran down. The visitors remained firm and escaped with a decision.
The Redhawks host CSU Bakersfield for another WAC contest on Friday, Oct. 14.The game is slated for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Championship Field.
