SEATTLE - (April 7) The Seattle U men's tennis team welcomed the Aggies of New Mexico State to Seattle Friday afternoon for a WAC conference match, but were unable to secure the win as they fell 7-0.
NMSU won all three doubles games to earn the doubles match point although SU's Michael Schoettler and John Stormans put up a good fight in the no. 2 slot as they fell 6-4 to Stijn de Haan and Mauri Benitez of the Aggies.
In singles no. 2, Schoettler took Luis Flores to the brink before falling in three sets, 7-6, 4-6, 13-11. Alex Chan also took his opponent to three sets 4-6, 6-2, 10-7 in the singles no. 6 position.
Head Coach Adam Reeb thought his team competed hard and that their conference record is not reflective of the progress being made.
"It was nice to play out first ever WAC home regular season match today," said Reeb. "Wish we could have come away with the win, but New Mexico St. is a tough team and showed why they are the defending champions. We fought hard and came very close on a couple of courts.
Our overall match scores in the WAC have not reflected how close we've been to breaking through. We've got to just keep at it and believe. We hope to have a big crowd for tomorrow's match against Chicago St."
The Redhawks host Chicago State tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. at the Amy Yee Tennis Center in Seattle.
