SEATTLE - (Jan. 31) For the second consecutive week, a member of Seattle U tennis program has been recognized for the WAC Tennis Athlete of the week. Caroline Maltby, a freshman from Glen Ellyn, Ill., follows fellow Redhawk, Jeremiah Kalmus, in earning such honors.
Maltby is coming off a singles victory over a PAC-12 opponent in UW's Lana Slavica, who she defeated in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. She is off to an impressive start to her career as she improved her overall singles record on the year to 2-0. In the team's dual match against Montana State on Jan. 22, Maltby beat the Bobcats' Wanda Holopainen in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 10-8.
Head coach Adam Reeb has been very complimentary of the freshman's toughness and ability to compete at such a high level in the early stages of her career.
"I'm so happy for Caroline," said Reeb. "She has been playing with so much confidence lately, and she really took control of this match from start to finish against a really good opponent. She is tough as nails and fights for every point, and I feel like she is starting to get into a groove. This is a well deserved honor for her."
Maltby and the rest of her teammates return to action this Friday as they travel to Boise, Idaho to take on the Boise State Broncos of the Mountain West Conference.
