SEATTLE - (Dec. 8) Some things in Aaron Menzies’ life have come quickly. As a ninth grader, he stood 6-foot-2. By 11th grade he towered at 6-11. He now stands 7-3.
Some things have taken more time. Menzies did not take up the game of basketball until the age of 16. He redshirted his first season at Seattle University, finally seeing action on the court as a redshirt freshman in 2015-16. He averaged 4.4 points and 4.8 rebounds in a reserve role.
But now, in his third season with the men’s basketball team, Menzies is coming into his own. The Redhawks’ starting center through eight games, he is averaging 13.6 points and 6.6 rebounds while shooting nearly 56 percent from the field and 72 percent from the free-throw line.
Quiet in Seattle U’s first three games, he broke out with a 35-point, 11-rebound performance in a overtime win against Louisiana-Monroe on Nov. 21. Since, he has had three double-doubles and four-double-digit outings in four games.
Menzies’ journey of growth - both physical and mental - patience, dedication and determination is paying off.
