SEATTLE – (Nov. 5) Seattle University volleyball fell, 3-0, to Utah Valley Saturday afternoon at the Connolly Complex. The Wolverines won the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) match by scores of 25-23, 25-13, and 25-21.
The Redhawks (12-13, 5-7 WAC) started out well in the opener, grabbing a 16-8 lead midway through the frame. Katarina Marinkovic tallied a pair of kills and also served two aces for SU. Kory White scored and then she and Shae Harris teamed up for a block. Mila Duarte recorded two kills and then Iris Ivanis set up a Marinkovic point for a 16-8 advantage.
The Wolverines (13-13, 8-4 WAC) rallied though, eventually reeling off a 9-0 run to take control on their way to a 25-23 decision in the first.
In the second game, Utah Valley took an early lead and never looked back, claiming a 25-13 win for a 2-0 match advantage.
The hosts looked better in the third set, working to a tie at 12. Duarte scored and Maja Stojanovic notched an ace. White and Harris each scored and then Lane and Stojanovic combined for a block to even the score at 12. UVU pulled away after that until Harris went on a late run to keep SU alive. Trailing 24-15, Harris led a 6-0 spurt, forcing a pair of Utah Valley timeouts. UVU finally came up with match point to sweep the contest.
Marinkovic paced SU with 15 points. Lane and Harris combined for 30 assists, while Ivanis compiled 10 digs. White added four block assists.
The Redhawks return home next week, hosting CSU Bakersfield (Thursday, Nov. 10) and Grand Canyon (Saturday, Nov. 12) at the Connolly Complex to close out regular season play.
