SPOKANE, Wash. - Men's Tennis had a solid performance at the Bulldog Classic this past weekend with junior Matt Alderson and freshman Trenton Nield reaching the quaterfinals in the doubles bracket while several others posted key wins in singles competition.
Alderson defeated Luke Ness of Eastern Washington in straight sets 7-5, 6-2 before faling in the next round to eventual singles champion, Gonzaga's Emilio Moreno. Nield won 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 with a victory over Gonzaga's Kyle Everly.
In the midst of dealing with some key injuries, Seattle U showcased some of their improving depth with senior John Stormans and freshman Alex Chan performing well. Stormans held off Eastern Washington's Ricardo Almeida 6-4, 7-5 in the singles consolation A bracket while Chan took care of Kooper Crow of Idaho, 6-1, 6-1 and Garner Sears of Eastern Washington, 6-2, 6-1.
Head Coach Adam Reeb was pleased with his team's overall effort and execution throughout the tournament.
"We had a solid showing at the Bulldog Classic this weekend," said Reeb. "Trenton and Matt had an impressive showing in doubles in reaching the quarterfinals, and overall I feel like every guy had a good tournament in singles as well."
Despite solid performances across the board, Reeb still sees room for improvement and believes his team is on the right track to maximizing their potential.
"We of course would have liked to have gotten even more wins, but the most important thing was how the guys played and performed over the weekend. They each had performance goals they were focused on this weekend, and they gave great effort in executing those goals. John played some of the best tennis I've ever seen him play, and Alex was another guy who played so well all weekend. He has improved so much this fall and the best is still to come."
The Redhawks are now off until January 13, when they travel just up the road to face the Washington Huskies at 4 and 6 p.m. With the lay-off, Reeb fully expects his guys to put in a lot of work as they aim to compete for the WAC Championship this spring.
"Our guys are fighters and always give maximum effort, and that is something that I'm very proud of them for, said Reeb." "We go into our off-season now with a lot of positives and we've just got to keep working to get ready for the spring."
