BERKELEY, Calif. - (Oct. 18) Four Seattle University men’s tennis players competed in the men’s USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships Oct. 13-16 in Berkeley, Calif., facing off against the region’s best.

"We had a pretty successful weekend in Berkeley,” said SU Head Coach Adam Reeb. “Arshak (Ghazaryan) and John (Stormans) picked up a nice doubles win in the main draw and ended up advancing to the final 32 of our Region which is a nice accomplishment. Trenton (Nield) and Matt (Alderson) also played some good doubles too for their first couple of matches together. Doubles is something we work a lot on so it was good to see the guys get out there and execute many of the things we have been practicing.”

Ghazaryan and Stormans opened doubles play in the main draw with an 8-3 win over Brian Lee and Jacob Lagman of Saint Mary’s. They advanced to face No. 4 seed Piers Foley and Wendell Watanabe of Washington, falling 8-2.

Ghazaryan also earned a No. 17 seed in the single main draw, marking the first time a Seattle U player has been seeded in the ITA Regionals. The freshman dropped a first round battle, 7-5, 7-6 (3) to Santa Clara’s Connor Garnett, but bounced back for a 6-2, 6-4 win over Eastern Washington’s Ricardo Almeida in the consolation draw.

“Arshak played some good tennis in singles, losing a very close match to a tough Santa Clara player and then getting a nice win over an Eastern Washington guy,” said Reeb. “Overall I was pretty pleased with how everyone competed in singles. This is such a fun tournament for our guys to get to compete in, playing against the best players in our region, and it really allows us the chance to see how we stack up against them and what areas we need to work on to keep getting better."

The Redhawks close out the fall portion of their schedule on Oct. 28-30 at the Bulldog Classic, hosted by Gonzaga in Spokane, Wash.
