EDINBURG, Texas - (Oct. 16) Karli White score a pair of first-half goals and Seattle U’s defense did the rest as the Redhawks earned a 2-0 Western Athletic Conference women’s soccer shutout of UTRGV Sunday afternoon.
The win was the the fifth straight for SU as it improves to 9-5-1 overall and 4-0-0 in WAC play. UTRGV fell to 9-5-1 overall and 1-3-0 in league contests.
White got things going early with her first goal coming just eight minutes into the run of play. The sophomore received a pass from Stephanie Spiekerman and sent in a left-footed shot from the top of the box past Vaqueros’ goalkeeper Kinga Szemik.
“I was happy with the way we started the game,” said SU Head Coach Julie Woodward. “Scoring an early goal helped us control the tempo of the game.”
Just inside 30 minutes, White struck again, scoring this time following a combination of passes from Hope Fleckner and Hannah Carrothers. Carrothers has now tallied an assist in each of the last three games for SU.
The Redhawks’ defense stifled WAC leading scorer Sarah Bonney, holding the striker not only scoreless, but also shotless. Bonney entered the game with 10 goals and four assists on the year.
“Overall, this is a tough road trip with two pretty good teams and lots of travel, and I was impressed with our focus all throughout the weekend,” said Woodward. “Karli scored two really great goals and Hannah continues to be so consistent both offensively and defensively.”
Mackenzie Curry had three saves in goal for Seattle U, earning her fifth win of the season and first solo shutout.
Seattle U is back home on Championship Field this week for the final two times this season. The Redhawks host UMKC on Thursday, Oct. 20, followed by Senior Day on Saturday, Oct. 22 against Chicago State.
