BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - (Oct. 15) For the second straight match, Seattle University volleyball started out hot en route to a first-set victory. But a momentum shift late in the match could not be overcome in a 25-19, 19-25, 31-29, 17-25, 7-15 setback at Western Athletic Conference foe CSU Bakersfield Saturday afternoon.

Senior Matea Mamic led three Redhawks (10-10, 3-4 WAC) in double digit kills with 14. Freshmen Katarina Glavinic and Katarina Marinkovic each had 12 kills. Glavinic hit a solid .429 for the match while Marinkovic added five service aces.

Seattle U hit .452 in the first set as it led nearly the entire way. After hitting .250 in the set-two loss, the Redhawks bounced back with a .390 percentage in the third set, winning the extra-points thriller 31-29 on a Mamic kill.

But things unraveled in the fourth set as CSUB’s block came alive. The ‘Runners had five team blocks and SU hit -.077 in the 25-17 setback. Seattle U could never regain momentum as CSUB opened up a 10-6 lead in the deciding set and scored five of the final six points to take the match.

The Redhawks return to the Connolly Complex next week as round two of WAC play begins Thursday, Oct. 20 against UTRGV. First serve is set for 5 p.m.
