PHOENIX - (Oct. 13) Matea Mamic led all players with 21 kills, three Redhawks hit over .400 for the match and the Seattle University volleyball team bounced back from a mid-match slide to claim a 25-22, 25-21, 18-25, 21-25, 15-10 win over Grand Canyon Thursday night.
Seattle U improves to 10-9 overall and 3-3 in Western Athletic Conference play while the Lopes fall to 4-14 on the season and 0-6 in WAC play.
Matea was one of three players to tally double-digit kills, finishing with her third 20-plus kill match of the season. The senior outside hitter reached 21 kills on 42 swings with just two errors for a .452 hitting percentage. Katarina Marinkovic finished with 12 kills and Katarina Galvanic added 11 kills on 19 attempts and just two errors (.474 average).
Kerry Lane had 45 assists while Mamic and Aly Borje-Bonkowski added 11 digs apiece. The Redhawks finished with 12 team blocks to the Lopes’ five.
GCU scored the first point of the first set, but Seattle U would never trail again, opening up a 10-6 advantage that forced the Lopes’ first time out. The score would even at 13-13, but a Maja Stojanovic kill followed by a block by Lane and Stojanovic put SU on top, 15-13 and they would hold on for the 25-22 set victory.
The Redhawks battled from behind in set two, taking their fist lead, 12-11, on a GCU error. The teams would battle back and forth before Seattle U opened up a 21-18 on the serve of Marinkovic. Hitting a match-high .533 for the set, the Redhawks would go on to win 25-21.
A momentum shift i the third and fourth sets allowed Grand Canyon to battle back into the match, but the Redhawks closed out the night with a strong fifth set, completing the victory on a Kory White kill.
The WAC road swing concludes Saturday at CSU Bakersfield with a match set for 1 p.m. The match will air live on the WAC Digital Network.
