BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - (Oct. 9) Ayana Robles and Brie Hooks provided late-game heroics for Seattle University women’s soccer as the Redhawks came from behind to clinch a 3-2 overtime victory at CSU Bakersfield Sunday afternoon.
Seattle U moves to 7-5-1 overall and remains perfect in Western Athletic Conference play at 2-0-0 while the ‘Runners fall to 5-8-1 overall and 1-1-0 in WAC games.
Trailing 2-1 in the final minutes of regulation, Robles came up with a huge equalizer at the 87:56 mark - her second goal of the season. The rookie took a crossing ball from Hannah Carrothers and finished a shot past CSUB goalkeeper Jen Padilla, forcing overtime.
Just two minutes into the golden-goal extra period, Hooks would tally her fourth game-winner of the season. Robles had a shot attempt blocked by Padilla, but the save came back out to Hooks’ feet. The senior transfer sent the ball back into the open net for her second golden goal winner of the season.
Seattle U was the aggressor for the majority of the match, building a 21-5 shot advantage against the Roadrunners.
But CSUB made the most of their opportunities early, scoring first in the 22nd minute, and again off a penalty kick in the 66th minute.
Sunshine Soriano scored her first goal of the season for the Redhawks late in the first half, stealing away a pass from a CSUB defender and sending in a shot off the post to knot the score at 1-1 in the 38th minute.
Ashley Routh and Mackenzie Curry split time in goal for the third straight match. Curry made one save in the first frame while Curry made two in the second half, and was credited with the win, her third of the season.
The Redhawks are back on the pitch on Friday, Oct. 14 at New Mexico State.
