SEATTLE - First-year Head Coach Suzy Barcomb announced the 2016-17 Seattle University women’s basketball schedule Monday, a slate of 31 contests that features a pair of exhibitions, 16 total home games and four opponents who participated in the 2016 NCAA Tournament.
Fans will get an early look at the team as both exhibition games will be contested in the Connolly Complex. The Redhawks host Seattle Pacific on Oct. 29 and Evergreen State College on Nov. 5, then officially open the 2016-17 season on Nov. 11 against 2016 NCAA Tournament qualifier Idaho.
The first road trip of the year takes SU to San Francisco for a Nov. 15 meeting at reigning West Coast Conference Tournament Champion and NCAA Tournament qualifier San Francisco. SU travels to Boise State on Nov. 20, but stays in the friendly confines of the Connolly Complex for games against UC Santa Barbara (Nov. 18), Portland State (Nov. 23), Washington (Nov. 26), Loyola Marymount (Nov. 29) and Montana (Dec. 2).
“The non-conference schedules present many challenges, but our coaching staff will formulate our best plan of attack and I trust that the team will be on board with the plan,” said Barcomb. “We will dedicated ourselves to preparing the team for each opponent, travel schedule and time demands and stay true to our process and work towards our goals for the program.
“We face numerous highly successful programs in non-conference allowing us to truly gage our strengths and weaknesses moving forward to league play.”
After spending much of November in Seattle, the Redhawks will spend nearly the entire month of December on the road. The stretch includes trips to Montana State (Dec. 4), UC Riverside (Dec. 10), San Diego (Dec. 12), Denver (Dec. 16), Colorado State (Dec. 18) and Southern Methodist (Dec. 21). SU closes out the calendar year with a Dec. 29 meeting in the Connolly Complex against CSUN.
“December will be very unusual as we will be on the road for six games straight, traveling to four different states,” said Barcomb. “However, we believe this will help us be more prepared for the WAC travel schedule we will face starting in January.”
Western Athletic Conference play begins at home on Jan. 7 against CSU Bakersfield. The remaining Redhawk home late includes hosting Grand Canyon on Jan. 21, Chicago State on Feb. 9, UMKC on Feb. 11, UTRGV on Feb. 23, New Mexico State on Feb. 25 and Utah Valley on March 4.
The 2017 WAC Basketball Tournament returns to the Orleans Arena for the seventh consecutive year and will be contest Wednesday, March 8 through Saturday, March 11.
“The players have been making solid strides in understanding the new expectations the coaching staff have set for them,” Barcomb said. “I believe we will continue to grow as a unified team throughout October and I see us hitting our stride as we get into the meat of the 2016-17 campaign.”
