SEATTLE - (Oct. 1) Seattle University volleyball completed a two-match Western Athletic Conference sweep Saturday afternoon with a 25-11, 26-24, 25-17 win over Chicago State in the Connolly Complex.

The win moved SU to 9-8 overall and an even 2-2- in WAC play while Chicago State dropped to 2-15 overall and 0-3 in league matches.

The Redhawks ran away with the first set, jumping out to a 13-1 lead on 12 straight serves by Matea Mamic. SU hit .429 in the set with 11 kills on 21 attempts and just two errors.

A lull in energy and unforced errors kept the Cougars in the second set, forcing SU to come from behind for the 26-24 win.

“(During the break) we challenged the team to have a greater sense of urgency,” said SU Head Coach James Finley. “We needed to work harder to the little things. The key was to come back out and focus on us.”

Chicago State hung around early in the third set as well, but the Redhawks went on a run behind the serve of Mila Duarte, turing a 5-9 deficit into a 12-10 lead. From there, the Redhawks would cruse to the 25017 final.

Maja Stojanovic led all players with 12 kills on 14 swings and zero errors for an .857 hitting percentage. Mamic had nine kills and hit .615 while Katarina Marinkovic added eight kills.

The Redhawks are back on the road next week, traveling to Orem, Utah for a Saturday, Oct. 1 match-up at Utah Valley.
