SEATTLE - (Sept. 26) As Western Athletic Conference play begins at Championship Field this week, Seattle University men’s soccer will also pay homage to its past, celebrating its 50th Anniversary with a day of festivities on Friday, Sept. 30.
SU first debuted a men’s soccer team in the spring of 1967 and would go on to compete in its first match on Oct. 14, 1967 - a 2-0 loss to Washington State’s club program. The program’s first win would come on Oct. 26, 1967, a 1-0 victory over Shoreline Community College.
The program would build over the years, winning the NAIA National Championship in 1997 and the NCAA Division II National title in 2004.
Since returning to NCAA Division I in 2008, SU has won the 2013 and 2015 Western Athletic Conference titles and advanced to Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament this past fall.
Friday’s slate of events includes an 11:30 a.m. brunch at The Chieftain for members of the 1967 team, a 3:30 p.m. “scouting report and reception” at Campion Ballroom, a 4:30 p.m. dinner, the 7:00 p.m. men’s soccer match versus Utah Valley at Championship Field and a postgame reception in the O’Brien Center.

Seattle U Athletics is Celebrating the start of soccer traditions at Seattle University with a tribute to the '67 men's soccer team on Sept. 30, 2016. Dinner will be served early followed by introductions of all men's soccer alumni on field at the SU vs. Utah Valley game. Come celebrate a great 50 years and show your Redhawk spirit at the game.
