EDINBURG, Texas - (Sept. 24) Seattle University volleyball dropped a four set decision, 19-25, 25-21, 21-25, 16-25, at University of Texas Rio Grande Valley to close out the first weekend of Western Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon.

The Redhawks (7-8, 0-2 WAC) got 13 kills from senior Matea Mamic and 10 from freshman Katarina Marinkovic, but collectively, SU hit just .169, due in large part to the Vaqueros’ 13.5 team blocks. Mamic and Marinkovic each finished with double-doubles on the day, collecting 11 and 14 digs, respectively.

Senior setter Kerry Lane added a double-double of 32 assists and 12 digs while senior libber Iris Ivanis finished with 16 digs and freshman middle Kory White had eight kills on 19 swings with just two errors (.316).

The second set produced SU’s best offensive output as they hit .350 (18 kills and four errors on 40 total attacks) on their way to the 25-21 win. The Redhawks trailed by no more than one early, then strung together fours straight points to open up a 10-7 lead. SU would lead by as many as three before back-to-back Mamic kills gave SU the set.

UTRGV had three players with double figure kills, including Bojana Mitrovic with a match-high 24.

After an eight-match swing away from home, the Redhawks return to the Connolly Complex next week, hosting WAC rivals UMKC on Thursday and Chicago State on Saturday.
